The inner critic isn’t always gentle or kind, but it can serve a purpose. A concept often referred to in popular psychology as the superego, the inner critic can be experienced as a judging inner monologue comprised of internalized ideas. This storytelling process may or may not be entirely conscious.

When life feels especially uncertain, it can be helpful to connect with the basics. For beginners, set a goal and routine that can be experienced successfully, such as five minutes per day. Practicing mindfulness doesn’t have to mean sitting in stillness for 30 minutes to get rid of uncomfortable thoughts. It’s about purposefully connecting with ourselves, wherever we go.
